Underscore is a brilliant show that combines literature with music in a live performance.

Blurring the lines between music and storytelling; song and recitation, guest writers Helen Garner and Brian Nankervis perform excerpts of their work over a lush electro-acoustic underscore provided by Sally Ford and the Idiomatics.

The stories, prose and poetic musings of these acclaimed writers are bookmarked by songs from
the band, featuring Sally Ford’s own wryly-observed lyrics of life, love and lived experience.

Helen Garner is a highly respected writer, screenwriter and journalist and Melbourne writing identity. In 2019 she was honoured with the Australia Council Award for Lifetime Achievement in Literature.

Brian Nankervis is a radio host on 774's The Friday Revue, producer of Rockwiz, and a remarkable creative wordsmith prone to original poetry and sharing stories of his life's comedic adventures.

The Idiomatics create an uplifting groove-drenched sounds drawing on the performers’ respective backgrounds with ARIA-winning Melbourne Ska Orchestra, the Spaghetti Western Orchestra, Texicali Rose, Pachuco Playboys, Dr Hernández, Yothu Yindi and The Black Sorrows.
