Underscore

The Idiomatics + Jane Clifton & Wayne Macauley

The Idiomatics
Jane Clifton
Wayne Macauley

FRIDAY 4 APRIL  5:30 PM - 7:30 PM

After a sellout show at Beleura in 2024, Underscore returns with celebrated writers Jane Clifton and Wayne Macauley performing excerpts of their work over a live electro-acoustic soundscape provided by Sally Ford and the Idiomatics.

The live readings are bookmarked by songs and stories from the Idiomatics featuring Sally Ford’s wryly observed lyrics of life, love and lived experience.

Jane Clifton is the genuine show-business all-rounder. Actress, singer, writer, poet, painter and registered civil celebrant. Jane has managed to carve out a 5 decade-long, showbusiness career. She has published three crime novels and an anthology of poetry.

Author Wayne Macauley is a Melbourne writer whose short fiction has been widely published. He is a former winner of The Age Short Story Competition and has appeared in the Best Australian Stories and New Australian Stories anthologies. His latest book, Simpson Returns, was shortlisted for a 2020 Victorian Premier's Literary Award and longlisted for the 2020 Voss Literary Prize.

The Idiomatics bring their rich musical provenance to the performance, from respective backgrounds with ARIA-winning Melbourne Ska Orchestra, Texicali Rose, Yothu Yindi and The Black Sorrows.

"There’s a special kind of intimacy here. A superbly focused and talented band with the unique combination of traditional and modern instruments (and musical styles) cradling each piece and giving it different shapes and textures.”      Stage Whispers, June 2023
