Argyle Trio

THURSDAY 31 AUGUST
1:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Wilma Smith: violin
Laurence Matheson: piano
Matthia Balzat: cello
The Argyle Trio came together just before the pandemic hit. They took their name from Argyle St in Hobart which runs down the side of the Hobart Town Hall where the trio played its first concert.
Pianist Laurence Matheson is well known to Melbourne and Beleura audiences since his days at ANAM and violinist Wilma Smith (your humble curator) is also a Melbourne fixture as former Concertmaster of the MSO.
Kiwi cellist Matthias Balzat will probably not be known to many since Covid interrupted further trio performances and Matthias lives in Germany where he studied. Two Kiwis in the group means strong connections across the ditch and the Argyle Trio will be undertaking an extensive nation-wide tour of New Zealand after performing at Beleura.
Their program starts with C minor Beethoven and features one of Dvorak's most-loved works, the "Dumky" Trio. Dumky is plural for Dumka, the Czech term for a ballad, elegy or lament. Essentially a series of six Dumky, the trio makes the most of the expressive and singing cello throughout this beautiful piece of pure Bohemian Romaticism.
