Ballet in Camera Exhibition

20 January - 28 March 2025

This intimate exhibition reveals some of the original newspaper images and associated costumes of The Australian Ballet productions from the 1970s to 1990s.

Ballet in Camera, displays The Australian Ballet’s signature performances captured in brilliant photographs for The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald newspapers last century  from Beleura's image collection

Two years ago Beleura purchased a collection of 8,000 original Fairfax newspaper images from an American photography gallery to safekeep for the Victorian community.

The collection comprises gelatin silver prints that show various Australian Ballet and overseas dancers on- and offstage, in the striking pictures used alongside previews and reviews in the papers.

By courtesy of The Australian Ballet, a small selection of original costumes and accessories from these ballets are also displayed with the original images of the productions.

Featured images are Lisa Pavane in La Sylphide, Gaelene Stock in Swan Lake, Stephen Heathcote in Spartacus, Christine Walsh in Cappella and Marilyn Jones in The Merry Widow.
